Child's Painted Rocking Horse and Hobby Horse




Supplies for Rocking Horse Supplies for Hobby Horse
1/16" thick plywood or 3/23" basswood for sides 1/8" thick basswood for head
1/8" thick basswood for head, seat, and end pieces 1/16" dowel
1/16" dowel turned oriental tooth pick
Paper for pattern Paint
White wood White wood glue
Paint Bunka
Bunka Gold thread
Silk ribbon
Decoupage spray Decoupage spray
Child's Painted Rocking Horse
  1. Trace the downloaded side and head pieces to make a pattern to cut out the wood pieces. Be sure to mark the black circle on the head.
  2. Cut out the traced side pattern pieces, head, seat, and 2 end pieces from the appropriate size and type of woods - See supply list.
  3. Drill a hole on the head at the black circle marked on one side of each head picture.
  4. Lightly spray the sheet with the art work that you run off from your printer with decoupage spray
  5. Glue the end pieces to each end of the seat. See Illustration
  6. Glue the head to one end of the seat
  7. Paint all surfaces of the horse that will not be covered with paper and the dowel. I used Americana Baby Blue, and Mint Julep Green. You will need to adjust the color because the printer color never comes out the same.
  8. Glue the printed side 1 and side 2 each to one of the wooden side pieces.
  9. Glue one printed horse head to each side of the wooden head.
  10. Glue one side pieces to each side if the seat and end pieces.
  11. Push the dowel through the hole and glue.
  12. When everything is dry and the glue set, spray the horse with two or three coats of decoupage spray. The rub gently with 4/0 steel wool.
  13. Pull the Bunka so it is unraveled. Put glue on the edge of the horse head and using a tooth pick push loops of the Bunka into the glue to make the mane. Do the same for the forelock.


  1. Make 5 or 6 1" loops around your finger and glue them together at one end. Turn the glued end under and glue this to the end of the seat to make the tail. Cut the ends See illustration
  2. Make a small bow from silk ribbon and glue it above the tail.

Child's Hobby Horse
  1. Cut horses head from 1/8" basswood
  2. Drill a hole on the head at the black circle marked on one side of each head picture
  3. Drill a hole in the center of the bottom edge of the head. Glue and insert the toothpick.
  4. Lightly spray the artwork with decoupage spray
  5. Paint the edge of the wooden head, the stick
  6. Glue one printed head piece to each side of the wooden head
  7. Insert the dowel handle.
  8. Twist gold thread around the stick as shown in the picture.
  9. Pull the Bunka so it is unraveled. Put glue on the edge of the horse head and using a tooth pick push loops of the Bunka into the glue to make the mane. Do the same for the forelock




  1. Make a small silk bow and glue it under the neck.
